Moritz Maria von Igelfeldt has to fight with jealous collegues and sinister intentions. McCall Smith paints a picture of german universities and scholarship so absurd, yet so true, it made me roll on the floor laughing. Scientists are a self-sufficient lot, cooking in their own juice. Painfully funny.

Dass Alexander McCall Smith nicht in der hohen Literatur zuhause ist, weiß man - aber das hier ist ja einsamer Niedrigstwasserstand!"Portuguese Irregular Verbs" besteht aus Anekdötchen und Geschichtchen, die aus jedem zeitlichen und kulturellen Rahmen rausgerissen sind. Der Geist der "Feuerzangenbowle" trifft auf einen Geigerzähler in einer rachitischen Neufassung von "Tod in Venedig" und macht sich zwischendurch über die Iren, die Italiener, die Deutschen, den von-und-zu-Adel und die akademische Welt lustig. Dabei jagt ein schmalbrüstiges Klischee das andere. Wenn's wenigstens lustig wäre! Wenn man mal über irgendwas lachen könnte!Von Handlung kann man nicht sprechen; die einzelnen Episoden sind abgehackt und willkürlich aneinander geflanscht, Struktur und Sinn sucht man vergebens, dafür findet man Banales und Triviales aneinandergestückelt. Auch weiß der Autor bis ins letzte Drittel seines Machwerks offensichtlich nicht, welchen Ton er eigentlich treffen will - Schmalspurwitz? Gesellschaftssatire? Am Ende gar Öko-Thriller? Der Abziehbildcharakter der Protagonisten macht es schwer, irgendeiner der Geschichten Substanz zu geben. Die klischeehafte Eindimensionalität von Professor Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld erstickt jeden interessanten Aspekt im Keim, und mehr als gefälliges Dahingeplätscher bringt der Autor hier nicht zustande.Eigentlich ein Stern, aber da das Hörbuch im englischen Original hervorragend gelesen wird von Hugh Laurie, einen zweiten Gnadenstern.
Die Igelfeld-Trilogie von Alexander McCall Smith zählt zu den lustigsten Büchern, die ich kenne. Amüsanter kann man deutsche "Intellektuelle", deutschen Universitätsbetrieb und deutsche Manieren nicht darstellen. Ich habe alle drei Bücher mehrmals mit großer Freude im Original gelesen und hätte nicht erwartet, dass ein Hörbuch dies noch übertreffen könnte.Doch so ist es. Die Art und Weise, wie Hugh Laurie die Geschichte vorliest und besonders, wie er deutschen Akzent nachahmt, lässt mich Tränen lachen. Dieses Hörbuch ist unbezahlbar.

Ich habe das Buch auf meinem Rückweg von Kanada nach Deutschland erworben, aufgrund einer Empfehlung der Lokalzeitung.Das Buch schildert in bester Form des absolut unübertrefflichen anglosächsischen Humors Episoden aus dem Leben eines Vollblutakademikers, der von sich, seinem Umfeld und den herrschenden irrationalen Glaubensannahmen bestens in Schach gehalten wird. Die einzelnen Erfahrungen, die geschildert werden sind an Detail- und Ideenreichtum nicht zu übertreffen. Meiner Meinung nach stellt McCall Smith die in Sprache, Ideen und Ausdrucksweise „gehobenen" Version des Tom Sharpe dar. Ein absoluter Genuss und die espiodenhafte Gestaltung macht das Buch zur geradezu idealen Bettlektüre.Die Sprache ist nicht überzogen und kann von dem halbwegs im Englischen Versierten ohne Hilfe eines Wörterbuches bestens gemeistert werden.Als nächstes werde ich die "villa of reduced circumstances" lesen.

This literary work is not merely hilarious but also educational, as Alexander McCall Smith describes the politicized world of academics in a daresay realistic manner, yet highlights the rough edges of the self-sustaining parallel universe of intellectualism from which intellectuals may never emerge. Furthermore, Hugh Laurie, now famous for Dr. House, is really unparalleled in his reading and oratory skills, not to mention his unsurpassed German accent and excellent pronunciations. Kudos to both Mr. McCall Smith and Mr. Laurie!
