Pressestimmen
Praise for We Are Okay“A meditation on surviving grief, We Are Okay is short, poetic and gorgeously written…. The power in this little book is in seeing Marin come out on the other side of loss, able to appreciate a beautiful yellow-glazed pottery bowl and other people’s kindnesses, and to understand that she might one day have a girlfriend and a future. The world LaCour creates is fragile but profoundly humane.” —The New York Times Book Review“A beautiful, devastating piece of art. . . .The title hints at a happy ending, but the journey toward it passes through some of the darkest corners of the heart. :)
I did not expect this book to be so damn emotional and sad. This is a book about grief, about love, about family. It's about running away and leaving everything behind and about those left behind not being okay with that. It's about Marin, who has been through a lot and whose life changed so completely and who doesn't know how to deal with that. But it's also about her realising that she's not alone and that people care about her and want her to be a part of their life again. And it's about two girls and their relationship, which wasn't just platonic. But it's complicated. We Are Okay is incredibly emotional and that makes it hard to read sometimes. I honestly did not expect to feel so attacked by everything and in some chapters every single sentence made me cry more. I cried more than I usually would for such a short book. And all of that happened on public transport... yayNina LaCour writes so beautifully. I felt so sucked into Marin's story and her emotional state. I wanted to know what happened before but I also dreaded finding out and I hoped for her and I feared her decisions. It did take me a long time to get into this novel, though. The beginning felt confusing and dragging for me and I didn't really feel invested in the story. I'm glad that changed dramatically later, but still.
One of the best books published in recent years. The main character is a girl who's a freshman in college and is dealing with depression caused by the recent death of her grandpa. Throughout the book the readers slowly discover the secrets he has hidden from her and get a glimpse into their complex relationship. I felt like this book did a good job in describing the mental struggle and the amount of effort it takes to appear "normal" to the world when you're in the middle of grief and other emotional struggles. The writing is straightforward, deep and heartfelt. Would highly recommend this book to everyone, but especially to young adults between 18-25.
Empfehlenswert!
This book made me cry. This book will be with me for a very long time. And this book is what makes reading the most precious past time there is. Thank you!
